Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, September 17, highlighted the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration at the BRICS Summit as a sign of the growing confidence and trust that countries place in India’s leadership. Speaking at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, PM Modi linked India’s diplomatic role with its expanding ambitions in the field of semiconductors.
The New Delhi Declaration was unanimously adopted by BRICS leaders during the September 12–13 summit hosted by India. The declaration reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to consensus, cooperation, inclusive growth and a more representative international order. It also commended the progress achieved under India’s 2026 BRICS chairship.
For Modi, the consensus was significant because BRICS now brings together countries with very different geopolitical interests. The expanded grouping includes major powers and regional players, making agreement on a common declaration more complicated amid conflicts and tensions across the world. The final document addressed issues including global conflicts, trade barriers, sanctions, development and multilateral reform.
At the BRICS summit, PM Modi had called for greater representation for developing countries in global institutions and pushed for stronger cooperation in areas ranging from supply chains to technology and health.
The timing of his remarks at SEMICON India 2026 also carries significance. India is attempting to build an end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem covering chip design, manufacturing, packaging, equipment, research and talent. The three-day event at Yashobhoomi has attracted hundreds of exhibitors and international companies from more than 40 countries.
The government has also approved Semicon 2.0 with an outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore, aimed at providing long-term support to India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
