Ace Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won medals everywhere in weightlifting, whether it was the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships or South Asian Championships, but an Asian Games medal had eluded her so far. Chanu filled that gap in her profile today, September 23, as she won the Silver medal in the Asian Games in Japan.
Mirabai Chanu lifted 87 Kgs in Snatch and then 111 Kgs in Clean & Jerk to end up with a total of 198 KGs and finished 2nd behind North Korean weightlifter Ri Song Gum, who ended up with a total of 215 Kgs, while Indonesian weightlifter Wijayana Luluk Diana Tri finished in 3rd place after lifting 191 Kgs combined in the two categories.
Chanu already has 3 Gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, 4 Gold medals in the Commonwealth Championships, 1 Gold in the South Asian Games, a Silver medal at the Olympics, and several other international honours. She has also been awarded the Padma Shri and the Khel Ratna Award by India.
This was the 11th medal for India at the Asian Games, with 1 Gold Medal, 5 Silver Medals, and 5 Bronze Medals.
