Following the humbling defeat in recently held West Bengal assembly elections, Trinamool Congress is facing one trouble after another. From facing public anger to senior party leaders resigning, troubles keep mounting for the party that ruled Bengal for 15 years. Now, Mamata Banerjee’s party is facing the prospect of a split in the party with several MLAs reportedly looking to rebel.
As per an NDTV report, several TMC MLAs are backing Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition in the assembly over party supremo Mamata Banerjee’ whose close aide and MLA,’s choice Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay. Sobhondeb is considered quite close to Mamata Banerjee but his selection to be LoP in the assembly has not gone down well with several other MLAs.
Notably, Ritabrata Banerjee, along with Sandipan Saha, was expelled from TMC for anti-party activities. Their expulsion came after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said in his press conference that these two MLAs had filed complaints of signature forgery in a party letter that endorsed Sovondeb Chattopadhay as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
The West Bengal CID is currently probing these signature forgery charges levelled by the CM. Several Trinamool leaders have been served notices in the case.
Amidst all this, 60 out of the 80 TMC MLAs had skipped the meeting called by Mamata Banerjee, raising further questions over the unity in the party.
As per reports, hectic meetings are going on in Kolkata as attempts are being made to placate the rebel MLAs so that party can present a united front in the assembly.
TMC was in power in West Bengal since 2011, but were swept away by Bharatiya Janta Party in the recent elections.
