Trinamool Congress (TMC) has expelled its MLAs Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee for anti-party activities. Notably, TMC has been suffering from one blow after another after they lost the Bengal assembly elections to BJP, and several party leaders have started maintaining distance from TMC and Mamata Banerjee.
In case of these two MLAs, Trinamool vice president Chandrima Bhattacharya said that the two MLAs had repeatedly failed to attend party meetings and involved themselves in anti-party activities. However, there was no clarity on what anti-party activity they indulged in.
The statement said, “After due consideration of the matter, the competent authority of the AITC has decided to expel you from the (primary) membership of the Party with immediate effect.”
Notably, the political dismissals by TMC were executed minutes after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari disclosed during a press conference at the state secretariat that the two legislators had initiated formal complaints regarding a “fake signature” controversy within the state assembly.
What is fake signature controversy
The Bengal fake signature controversy is an investigation into forged signatures of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs on official documents submitted to the West Bengal Assembly.
Following the loss in the assembly election, TMC submitted a formal letter to the Assembly Secretariat endorsing Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay for the position of Leader of the Opposition. The document contained the purported signatures of about 70 TMC MLAs.
The Assembly Secretariat flagged discrepancies when the signatures did not match the official records of legislators who had recently taken their oath.
This development has put TMC and their leaders in legal trouble from which they are struggling to get out.
