Protesters from Punjab have started yet another agitation, this time against the proposed India-US trade deal. Notably, the deal is yet to be signed and is still being worked upon. The details of what will be or won’t be included in the trade deal are not yet publicly known.
However, against the proposed deal, a day-long “Kisan Mahapanchayat” was planned in the national capital at Kisan Ghat under the banner of “Desh Bachao Morcha”. To prevent any unrest, Haryana Police has blocked the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana. A large number of tractor-trolleys from Punjab have already reached this border.
Barricades were erected at the Punjab-Haryana border in scenes that reminded people of the February 2024 “Delhi Chalo-2” agitation. Notably, the Haryana-Punjab Shambhu border was closed for nearly one and a half years at the time. Concrete blocks, iron spikes and multi-layered barricading was erected to prevent Punjab protesters from heading towards Delhi, now the same thing seems to be getting repeated.

Now again, heavy police deployment at the Shambhu border is visible, with barricades erected and cemented blocks placed at the bridge over Ghaggar river.
This border is a very busy crossing with people from the 2 neighbouring states using it to cross into the other state, but now due to these protesters, it is likely to again remain closed for the foreseeable future.
Notably, the India-US trade deal is currently being negotiated and nothing has been finalised yet. The details of the deal are still being worked upon, and there is no detail available yet to the public that what may or may not be a part of the deal.
