Tension escalated in Ranchi on Monday, August 10, as thousands of Jharkhand student protesters marching towards the state Assembly faced a heavy police crackdown. Security forces used water cannons, tear gas and lathi charges after protesters breached multiple layers of barricading erected around the Assembly complex to stop the protesters.

The protesters, largely JPSC and JSSC aspirants, had gathered for a ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ to press for action against irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission. The students have been demanding greater transparency in the recruitment process, action over alleged paper leaks and irregularities, and a CBI probe into the controversies surrounding the examinations.
The agitation has been continuing for more than two weeks, reflecting growing frustration among students over recruitment in the state. The protesters have maintained that their concerns have not been adequately addressed despite the state government saying that most of their demands have been met.
The administration deployed extensive security arrangements to prevent the march from reaching the Assembly. Barricades and barbed-wire fencing were placed across routes leading towards the complex, while prohibitory orders were imposed in the surrounding area. Despite the restrictions, protesters continued moving forward and managed to cross several barricades.
The situation turned tense as police attempted to stop the advancing crowd. Water cannons were first used to push the protesters back, followed by tear-gas shells and lathi charges as demonstrators continued to move towards the Assembly. Reports said several people were injured during the confrontation, further making the atmosphere around the protest site tense.
The visuals from Ranchi showed determined protesters refusing to retreat despite the police action. Protesters continued raising slogans and attempting to advance towards the Assembly.
The confrontation has turned what began as a prolonged student agitation over examination reforms into a major law-and-order challenge for the Hemant Soren government. With students insisting that their demands be addressed and the administration determined to prevent them from reaching the Assembly, the standoff could further intensify with the state government refusing to listen to the students’ demands.
