Gulveer Singh has emerged as one of the biggest names in India’s athletics campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The 28-year-old long-distance runner competed in the 1,500 metres, 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres events, making him one of India’s most versatile distance runners.
Gulveer won silver in the men’s 10,000m, clocking 28:29.38, improving on the bronze he won in the same event at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. His silver also made him the first Indian to win two Asian Games medals in the men’s 10,000m, and now he has 3 after winning the Bronze in the 5,000 meters.
In the 1,500m, he produced a personal best of 3:36.72. That performance further underlined his remarkable range as an athlete, moving from the endurance-heavy 10,000m to the considerably faster 1,500m.
Gulveer Singh subsequently completed a three-medal haul in Japan, winning bronze in the 5,000m. He therefore finished the athletics program with medals in all three individual events he contested at these Games.
His rise has been built over several years. Born on June 1, 1998, Gulveer comes from Sirsa village in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district. He joined the Indian Army’s Grenadiers Regiment in 2018, where his running career developed alongside his military service.
Gulveer has also established himself as a record-breaking distance runner. World Athletics lists his national records at 12:59.77 for 5,000m and 27:00.22 for 10,000m, performances that have placed him among Asia’s leading distance runners. He is also a two-time Asian champion.
The year 2026 has been particularly productive for him. At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he won silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m, becoming the first Indian man to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the 10,000m.
From an Army runner who began building his career through long-distance races to an athlete winning three medals across three events in Japan, Gulveer Singh has become one of the defining faces of Indian athletics at the 2026 Asian Games.
