Smit Machchhar: The Indian pilot who stood between 174 lives and a disaster

In a terrifying mid-air hijacking attempt that could have ended in catastrophe, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar emerged as the hero and saved the lives of everyone aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. His actions, taken while seriously injured, have drawn worldwide praise, including from leaders in India, Israel and the United States.

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, when an extraordinary crisis erupted inside the cockpit. According to Israeli officials and media reports, Machchhar was attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot from Oman, who allegedly attempted to hijack the flight and take control of the aircraft. The plane subsequently went into a rapid descent, creating the possibility of a devastating disaster involving the 174 people on board. This was another potential 9/11 tragedy waiting to happen but Smit Machchhar intervened.

Despite suffering serious injuries and losing a significant amount of blood, Machchhar managed to activate the cockpit-door release. That decision proved critical. It allowed passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and overpower the co-pilot. Other pilots who were travelling as passengers then helped regain control of the aircraft. The flight was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing. All passengers were ultimately brought to safety.

What makes Machchhar’s actions particularly remarkable is that he was himself the victim of the attack. Instead of being incapacitated by his injuries, he acted in a way that enabled others to intervene. His split-second decision to open the cockpit door effectively created the opportunity for the passengers and other crew members to prevent the situation from becoming an aviation catastrophe.

The scale of the international reaction has been striking. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Machchhar a “hero”, saying that despite being seriously injured, he demonstrated immense courage and an unwavering determination to protect others. Modi said his valour helped save hundreds of lives.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also hailed Machchhar’s “extraordinary bravery”, crediting him with helping prevent a catastrophic mid-air disaster and describing him as a true hero.

US President Donald Trump also praised Machchhar, describing him as a hero while recounting what Netanyahu had told him about the incident.

Machchhar is now recovering in a hospital in Tabuk and has been reported to be in stable condition. His story has become one of extraordinary courage under unimaginable pressure, a reminder that in aviation, seconds can determine the difference between disaster and survival. On this flight, Captain Smit Machchhar’s decision to act despite his own injuries helped save 174 souls.
