On Friday, May 29, the Supreme Court of India was informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now personally supervising the NEET-UG cancellation, following a paper leak.

This was disclosed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta after the apex court sought a response from the government in an affidavit detailing how and in which manner the process and conclusion of the leak probe would be done.

Notably, the NEET controversy refers to the paper leak and irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) 2026 examination, conducted by India’s National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam, held on 3 May 2026 for over 2.27 million aspirants seeking admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses, was cancelled on 12 May 2026 after reports that the exam paper had been leaked beforehand.

During the hearing of the case, Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha asked the Centre about how much monitoring of implementation has happened and the reason behind the leak.

In response, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that new mechanisms have been put in place for NEET-UG exam scheduled on June 21, and also mentioned that the Prime Minister is himself monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, asking the Centre to file an affidavit in the matter, the Court Bench posted petitions seeking a direction to replace the National Testing Agency (NTA) with a robust and autonomous body to conduct the medical entrance examination for further hearing in the second week of July after summer vacation.
