The Delhi Gymkhana Club did not receive any interim relief from the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, May 26, Bar and Bench reported. However, summons have been issued on the suits filed against the government’s order to Delhi Gymkhana Club to return the land.
Justice Avneesh Jhingan of the High Court noted, “The issue is premature and presumptive. As on date, there is nothing on record to substantiate that action under Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act has been taken and in case the need so arises, the plaintiffs can avail remedies in accordance with law. In view of the statements made by the SG, no further interim directions are called for.”
The two suits in the case have been filed by Vijay Khurana, a member of the club, and by the Staff Welfare Association of the Delhi Gymkhana. Notably, over 600 employees work at the club.
Earlier, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the club had been asked to peacefully hand over the premises and that the eviction process would take place only after due notice.
Earlier, on Friday, May 22, the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has asked the Gymkhana Club to hand over the premises at 2, Safdarjung Road by June 5, 2026. The ministry has asked for the property for defence needs and other vital public infrastructure projects.
The order by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said the land was required to meet urgent institutional needs, governance infrastructure and public-interest projects in the national capital.
