A devastating school shooting in Thailand has shocked the nation after a 14-year-old student killed his grandparents at their home before heading to his school, where he shot five teachers dead and left several others injured. He later shot himself as well. This is one of Thailand’s worst school-related shootings in recent years. The motive behind the attack is still not clear.
According to Thai police, the boy first used his grandfather’s legally owned 9 mm handgun to shoot and kill his grandparents at their home before heading to the prestigious Debsirin Nonthaburi School, on the outskirts of Bangkok. Once on campus, he opened fire, reportedly firing more than two dozen rounds. Initial reports from authorities varied on the casualty count, but later updates indicated that five teachers were among those killed, while numerous students and staff sustained injuries. The teenager then turned the weapon on himself and shot himself.
Emergency services rushed to the school as terrified students and teachers barricaded themselves inside classrooms or fled the campus. Hospitals in the region received multiple injured victims, at least 2 of whom remain in critical condition. The attack prompted a massive police operation and the closure of nearby schools as authorities secured the area.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
