Conspiracy theories run amok after US Senator Lindsey Graham’s sudden death, was it Russia or Iran’s doing?

The sudden death of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, aged 71, has triggered an avalanche of conspiracy theories across social media, with speculation spreading far more quickly than verified information. The South Carolina senator, who has been in US Senate since 2003, passed away after a sudden illness. Notably, he wanted 500% tariff on India for importing Russian oil.

While authorities have urged the public to wait for official findings, numerous unsubstantiated claims have surfaced online, with several conspiracy theories circulating on social media.

Within hours of the announcement of Graham’s death, hashtags related to alleged assassinations, secret government operations, and foreign involvement began trending on several social media platforms. Anonymous accounts and conspiracy-focused influencers claimed, without evidence, that the senator’s death was linked to his recent political positions, international engagements, or internal disputes within Washington. None of these claims have been supported by credible evidence or official investigations.

Just days before his death, Lindsey Graham was one of the US public figures whose photo was displayed during Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral with a red target. That has given fuel to speculations that he could have been poisoned by Iran.

At least they used a good photo of me.

Then there is the Russia angle, the US Senator had visited Ukraine just 2 days before his death. Ukraine is in a war with Russia for over 4 years now. During his visit, Graham called for more sanctions against Russia and pledged more US support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war.

Interestingly, Graham had inspected a drone factory in Ukraine a day before his death, and then Russia blew up that facility. That has given further fuel to the rumours that Russia could be behind his ‘sudden illness’.

Lindsey Graham, who served as the Republican senator from South Carolina for more than two decades, remained one of the most recognizable voices in U.S. foreign policy and national security debates. His outspoken positions on issues ranging from Ukraine and the Middle East to China made him both a prominent supporter and a frequent target of criticism. That high public profile has likely contributed to the intensity of online speculation following reports of his death.

While we wait for the official response for the reason of his death, there is no stopping online speculations that Iran or Russia may be behind the death of the South Carolina senator.
