Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has once again rewritten the record books, becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history. The 15-year-old achieved the landmark during East Zone’s semifinal against Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday.
Suryavanshi reached his fifty in just 42 balls, announcing his arrival in the red-ball tournament in typically aggressive fashion. He brought up the milestone with a six, showcasing the fearless stroke-making that has made him one of the most talked-about young cricketers in India.
At 15 years and 157 days, Suryavanshi broke a record that had stood for an incredible 57 years. The previous mark belonged to Laxman Singh, who scored a Duleep Trophy half-century in 1969 at the age of 16 years and 23 days. Piyush Chawla had occupied the next spot after scoring a fifty at 16 years and 307 days.
What made Suryavanshi’s achievement even more impressive was that he went well beyond the half-century mark. Opening the innings alongside experienced batter Abhimanyu Easwaran, the youngster attacked the Central Zone bowlers and eventually scored 92 runs off 81 deliveries, falling just eight runs short of a memorable century.
The century would have brought another historic record within his reach. Had he reached three figures, Suryavanshi could have challenged Sachin Tendulkar’s record as the youngest Duleep Trophy centurion.
His latest feat adds another chapter to a rapidly developing career. Already known for his explosive batting, Suryavanshi has also shown his versatility in the tournament, contributing with the ball and even taking charge as East Zone’s stand-in captain when Ishan Kishan left the field injured.
At just 15, Suryavanshi is already making history at the senior level. If his extraordinary progress continues, Indian cricket may well be witnessing the emergence of another special talent.
