Punjab: Former CM Charanjit Singh Channi puts up a show of strength at his house as internal turmoil within Congress party comes to the fore

The rumours of turmoil within Punjab congress is not showing any signs of ending soon. A day after Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari put up a cryptic post on social media expressing his disappointment at getting snubbed in organisational appointments, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s camp gathered at his house in Morinda, Punjab, in an apparent show of strength.

A large number of senior Congress leaders, former ministers, sitting and former MLAs, along with party supporters, gathered at Channi’s residence following Congress decision on the state leadership. Channi’s supporters want removal of Raja Warring from the state president role.

In his post on X, the former CM wrote, “Congress party leadership called on me at my residence and urged me to present the sentiments and aspirations of the people of Punjab before the High Command.”

Earlier this week, Congress party had announced a major organisational revamp in the Punjab unit ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. However, the party retained Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Channi’s supporters were expecting that he would get that role ahead of next year’s election.

Earlier yesterday, July 2, senior Congress leader Manish Tewari had shared the news that he has been ignored in the organisational revamp. Shared the news, he posted, “Wish I had an antidote for the insecurities of individuals and institutions!”

It is quite clear that all is not well within the Congress party and there is factionalism going on. With assembly elections on the horizon, the party is busy playing internal politics instead of focusing on the upcoming election.
