After all the hype, Cockroach Janta Party’s protest in Delhi turns out to be damp squib

For the past couple of days, Indian political discourse was dominated by something called the Cockroach Janta Party. The party was formed after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant commented that unemployed youngsters “like cockroaches” were becoming “parasites” in society by attacking institutions on social media and through RTI activism. However, immediately after this ‘party’ was created, it forgot about CJI’s comment and started focusing on Gen Z of India.

It tried to latch on to the youth’s angst against the leak of NEET question paper and the problems with CBSE’s On Screen Marking system. The leaders of this so called party organised a protest in Delhi today, Saturday, 6 June, but the protest turned out to be a damp squib.

After days of dramatic announcements, fiery social media posts, and promises of a political earthquake that would shake the foundations of the national capital, the much-publicized protest could only draw a small crowd. A large part of the crowd was formed by reporters, with leftist student unions providing the bulk of the rest.

The party had claimed that thousands of supporters would descend upon Delhi to demand justice for what it described as the “systematic discrimination against resilient species.” However, this party realised a bitter truth, social media followers don’t translate into support on the ground. The protest which was supposed to last till 5 PM, was falling apart much before that with several protesters leaving by 3 PM.

Several television channels had dispatched full crews expecting dramatic scenes of confrontation, but they were left disappointed as the protest didn’t result in any dramatic visuals. Even the crowd was so thin that most of the camera crews were forced to cover them in tight shots in an attempt to show that Jantar Mantar is crowded.

The protest venue itself reflected the anti-climactic nature of the event. A stage erected for fiery speeches remained largely unused, while rows of plastic chairs reserved for supporters sat empty. The high temperature definitely played a role with even Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke rushing to his car at one point due to the heat. However, it also showed how little support this latest anti-government ‘movement’ has on the ground.

Meanwhile, CJP leaders declared the protest a “historic success” and claimed that “millions were supporting the movement spiritually.”

Social media users were quick to seize the opportunity. Memes flooded the internet comparing the event to a movie trailer that generated enormous excitement only for the actual film to flop on opening day. One viral post read, “Delhi was told to brace for a storm. What arrived was a light drizzle.”

Residents living near the protest site also appeared largely unaffected. Many admitted they were unaware that any major demonstration was taking place until news channels began covering the disappointing turnout.

As the protest concluded quietly without any significant developments, questions emerged about the party’s actual support base and its ability to translate online enthusiasm into real-world participation.
