US President Donald Trump praises India’s electoral system, takes aim at US voting process

US President Donald Trump has turned to India’s electoral system as an example while making his case for tighter voting rules in America, offering a compliment to the world’s largest democracy. Trump cited India’s voter identification requirements as he renewed his push for the SAVE America Act, legislation aimed at strengthening citizenship verification and voter-ID requirements in US federal elections.

Notably, many in India, those who lose elections, complain about India’s electoral system and want to go back to the ballot paper method where anyone with might could capture polling booths and get votes in their favour.

Trump pointed specifically to India’s massive electorate, noting that the country’s last general election involved around 646 million voters, with less than one per cent voting by mail, notably, in 2020 elections, the votes by mail propelled Joe Biden to Presidency ahead of Trump.

Trump highlighted the requirement for voters to present valid photo identification, presenting the system as an example of how a large democracy can conduct elections while maintaining strict voter verification.

The comparison is striking because India has frequently faced criticism from sections of the political opposition over its electoral procedures, electronic voting machines and the functioning of election authorities. Yet Trump’s latest remarks effectively put India forward as a model for reforms he believes are necessary in the United States.

The comments come amid Trump’s continuing campaign to overhaul American election procedures. He has repeatedly raised concerns about election security and vulnerabilities, where anyone in the US can cast a vote, whether legal or illegal.

Trump’s praise for India has therefore created an ironic political moment. A country whose elections are sometimes questioned by its own political class is now being cited by the US president as an example of stronger voter verification.

For India, however, Trump’s remarks represent more than just praise. They highlight the scale and logistical sophistication of Indian elections, where hundreds of millions of people participate in a process administered across one of the world’s most populous and diverse democracies.

When it comes to managing elections on an enormous scale, India has developed systems that even American political leaders are increasingly willing to study.
