Indian athlete Vithya Ramraj etched her name into the history books by delivering a phenomenal performance in the women’s 400m hurdles event at the Asian Games. Displaying remarkable grit, pacing, and athletic prowess, Ramraj secured a hard-earned bronze medal for the country.
Her stellar run shattered the legendary PT Usha’s historic national record, which had stood unchallenged for 42 years since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. PT Usha’s benchmark of 55.42 seconds had long been considered one of the most enduring and sacred milestones in Indian athletics. By clocking a brilliant personal best of 54.75 seconds, Ramraj not only propelled herself onto the podium on the continental stage but also officially closed the chapter on track history’s longest-standing outdoor national record. Vithya Ramraj also became the first Indian female athlete to clock a time below 55 seconds mark.
This accomplishment marks a massive milestone in Vithya Ramraj’s career and is just another one of the stellar performances by Indian athletes in the Track & Field events at the Japan Asian Games.
Vithya Ramraj had come very close to breaking PT Usha’s record in the last edition of the Asian Games as well when she had clocked 55.42s in the heats, but this time, she shattered the long-standing record.
This again shows how the Indian athletes are improving with each passing year and the fortunes of Indian athletics contingent are on an upswing.
