Elon Musk: The biggest loser of the US midterm elections!

If there were an award for throwing money down the drain, Elon Musk would have won it comfortably in the 2026 US midterm elections. Unfortunately for him, even that victory would have required voters’ approval!

The world’s richest man reportedly pumped nearly $474 million into Republican campaigns, hoping to buy political influence, protect Republican control of Congress and demonstrate that his enormous wealth could translate into electoral power. The American electorate had other ideas. This also shows that elections can’t be simply bought.

Democrats swept both chambers of Congress, Republican candidates backed by Musk suffered humiliating defeats, and his biggest political gamble in Texas spectacularly collapsed.

Musk reportedly spent more than $200 million backing Republican Ken Paxton against Democrat James Talarico. Talarico won decisively. Musk also backed Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost to Democrat Gina Hinojosa. In Ohio, billionaire-backed Republican Vivek Ramaswamy also lost the gubernatorial race.

What a return on investment! One could almost feel sorry for the poor billionaire. Almost!

For months, Musk used his social media platform X to attack Democratic candidates, amplify Republican messaging and warn Americans about the dangers of a Democratic victory. He seemed convinced that his money, online influence and army of followers could dictate the direction of American politics.

But democracy delivered a rather expensive reality check.

As election results poured in, Musk joked that his ‘election-interfering space lasers’ had failed. Perhaps he should have invested in something more useful: understanding what ordinary voters actually wanted.

The irony is delicious. A man who believes artificial intelligence can transform civilisation, who wants to colonise Mars and who runs one of the world’s most influential social media platforms couldn’t figure out how to win an election despite spending nearly half a billion dollars.

The bigger embarrassment is that Democrats have now taken control of Congress and are expected to scrutinise Musk’s government contracts and business interests much more closely.

Musk wanted to play kingmaker. Instead, American voters made him the biggest political loser of the year.

Turns out, you can buy Twitter, build rockets and manufacture electric cars. But you still cannot buy the American electorate!
