The setbacks for Trinamool Congress (TMC) after their massive loss in West Bengal assembly elections show no sign of abating any time soon. Now, TMC leader Jahangir Khan, who contested assembly elections on TMC ticket from Falta in Diamond Harbour subdivision of South 24 Parganas district has been arrested.
Jahangir Khan was arrested near the India-Nepal border on Monday, June 8, in connection with an extortion case. Law enforcement agencies were searching for him in several cases for a number of days.
Notably, repolling had to be conducted in Falta after several residents protested that they were not fairly allowed to cast their votes due to the hooliganism of the TMC goons. Falta is a part of the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
The investigators had been searching for Jahangir Khan in connection with a number of allegations of extortion, intimidation and other criminal activities.
Khan had branded himself as the local ‘Pushpa’ after the Telugu film starring Allu Arjun. However, unlike the film, this Pushpa couldn’t escape the security agencies for long. He had been on the radar of law enforcement officers over alleged public threats and election fraud attempts.
The officials have not disclosed the full nature of the charges against Jahangir Khan. However, they had received multiple complaints against him from residents in the Falta area where he used to rule with an iron fist.
