Congress in Punjab is in deep trouble. A rising political party in the state has lauded Charanjit Singh Channi, a dissenting Congress Dalit leader, for his contribution to constantly raising Sikh issues.
Waris Punjab De’s statement comes at a time when a vertical split within the Congress in Punjab looks quite imminent. With each passing day, the situation in the Punjab Congress is turning from bad to worse. With the party divided into two factions, its political future appears increasingly uncertain.
Weeks have passed, but the factional war between Charanjit Singh Channi and Raja Warring groups shows no signs of receding.
In a new twist to this ongoing political battle within Congress. The Waris Punjab De camp has praised Channi, leaving the Congress leadership increasingly uncomfortable.
Tarsem Singh, the father of jailed Waris Punjab De leader and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, praised Channi for repeatedly raising issues concerning the Sikh community. Tarsem Singh’s statement comes at a time when Channi recently criticised its very own party leaders from Haryana for eulogising 1984 anti-Sikh riots convict Sajjan Kumar, who passed away some days back.
It is worth recalling that Charanjit Singh Channi, the Congress MP from Jalandhar, had also supported Amritpal Singh’s release in the Lok Sabha on July 25, 2024. Channi had said that keeping an elected MP in custody under the NSA was like an “undeclared Emergency.”
Interestingly, Channi, meanwhile, has been staying away from official Congress programmes and appears unwilling to back down. His supporters have repeatedly raised slogans at meetings organised by Raja Warring, further exposing the deepening factional divide within the party.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has already postponed his Punjab visit scheduled for August end. The crisis within the Punjab Congress remains unresolved, while uncertainty and unrest are growing among the party’s grassroots cadre. Yet, Rahul Gandhi appears to be showing little urgency in addressing the situation.
