The greatest sporting event in the world, the Football World Cup is currently going on in US, Canada, and Mexico. The World Cup has generated plenty of excitement, lots of upsets, amazing performances, and more than one controversy. Fair to say, this World Cup has delivered.
The biggest controversy during this World Cup was of course US President Donald Trump intervening and getting US striker Folarin Balogun’s Red Card suspension overturned. It didn’t matter in the end as Belgium knocked out US anyway with a comprehensive 4-1 win.
Now, after Donald Trump, another US politician has decided to talk about the FIFA World Cup- New York mayor Zohran Mamdani. He said that Egypt were robbed during their Round of 16 clash with Argentina. Yeah right Mamdani.
For those who don’t know, Argentina staged a stunning comeback in the last 12 minutes of their game against Egypt. Inspired by Lionel Messi, Argentina turned the game around, from trailing 0-2 to winning by 3-2. There were a few contentious calls during that period, and even before that, however, nobody was robbed.
Egypt’s second goal was ruled out, justifiably, after a foul on Lisandro Martinez by Egyptian player Marwan Attia. The possession changed after that blatant foul and Egypt went on to score a goal, which was correctly ruled out by the officials.
Similarly, when Salah was tackled inside the Argentinian penalty box by Alvarez, he got the ball first, so there was no foul. However, Egypt made a big deal out of it because they conceded another goal in the counterattack by Argentina with Enzo heading in the winner.
Now those are the facts about the so called controversial decisions during the match, but question is, why is the New York Mayor commenting on that. Is it just because Egypt is an Islamic country and he shares the religion with them? Or is it because there are plenty of Muslim voters in New York and he is pandering to them? Are voters across the world so gullible to fall for such nonsense?
