Hurt over Congress betrayal in Tamil Nadu, DMK to skip INDI Alliance meeting on June 8

The cracks in the opposition’s INDI Alliance, that was put together before 2024 Lok Sabha elections to counter BJP, had started to appear quite quickly after those elections. Now, those cracks are just widening, and the parties who formed that bloc all seem to be going their separate ways. On Thursday, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) said it will not take part in the INDI Alliance meeting to be held in Delhi on June 8.

MK Stalin led DMK took this decision over what it perceives as the betrayal by Congress party in Tamil Nadu. Notably, Congress fought the Tamil Nadu assembly elections in alliance with DMK but after results, joined their rival Joseph Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to become part of the government.

The INDI Alliance has been full of contradictions right from the start with alliance partners viciously attacking each other in states while pretending to be together at the national level. But now, with one of the biggest parties in the bloc, DMK, skipping their meeting, is it the end of the road for this anti-BJP alliance?

DMK leaders had earlier publicly called out Congress for the betrayal and backstabbing. This raises the question, Congress may have become part of the government in Tamil Nadu by siding with the current CM Vijay after elections, but did they sacrifice their national ambitions for that? After all, DMK brought a big chunk of seats for the INDI Alliance in 2024, it got 22 seats in 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
