On May 26, Home Minister, in line with PM Narendra Modi’s vision, had announced the formation of a high-level committee to examine this “unnatural demographic change” caused by illegal immigration and other unspecified factors. Notably, PM Narendra Modi had talked about this demographic change during his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2025.
Now, the Home Minister has directed that committee to undertake a detailed study of population shifts in India’s border districts and assess their implications.
Amit Shah, chairing a meeting, which was attended by all the members of the panel, asked all the committee members to conduct field visits to border regions, metropolitan centres and industrial towns to examine demographic changes attributed to illegal migration and other factors described by the Modi government as “unnatural causes”.
The committee is headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar. Other members of the panel include Census Commissioner, former IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, former IPS officer Balaji Srivastava, and Dr Shamika Ravi. The Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I) in the Home Ministry serves as its member secretary.
This is another step reaffirming that the government wasn’t doing lip service when it talked about countering unnatural demographic change and is very serious to put an end to it.
