Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam sacked by JNU over sexual harassment allegations

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has sacked Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from his position as a professor following an internal inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment by female students. The university issued its dismissal order on Friday, October 9, 2026, making the decision effective immediately.

The case has drawn considerable attention because Akoijam is not merely an academic but also a sitting Congress MP representing inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha. He was associated with JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences.

According to media reports, 11 female students filed complaints against him, alleging inappropriate conduct during academic interactions and other encounters. The university’s Internal Committee investigated the allegations and recommended major disciplinary punishment. The administration subsequently ordered his dismissal, citing the committee’s findings and applicable service rules.

Akoijam has denied the allegations, describing them as false and motivated, according to reports. However, the university has proceeded with disciplinary action following its internal inquiry.

The development also raises questions about accountability within academic institutions. Universities are expected to provide students with an environment in which they can pursue their education without fear of harassment or abuse of authority. Complaints must be investigated fairly, and institutions must act on their findings in accordance with established procedures.

For the Congress, the controversy involving one of its MPs could invite further political scrutiny. However, the central issue should remain the findings of the inquiry, the rights of the complainants and the procedures followed by the university.

Ultimately, the matter highlights that positions of authority carry responsibilities, and allegations of sexual harassment must be addressed through fair, credible and accountable processes.
