Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been very strict about illegal immigrants coming to Assam ever since he became the Chief Minister of the state. Now, in his latest attempt to crack down on the illegals in the state, he has stated that they will not be issuing Aadhar cards to people above 18.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X, “In national interest, Assam has decided to ban issuance of Aadhar cards to all adults above 18 years so that no illegal can legitimise themselves.”

He further added that the ST and Tea Garden community will get an extension till 31st March 2027 to enroll themselves under Aadhar.
This is a significant step as many of the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh have been caught carrying Indian Aadhar cards while living illegally in India.
Another point to be noted is that there is recourse for genuine cases. Those who are 18 and above, and want to get an Aadhar card will have to go through an additional layer of verification before any Aadhar-related services are processed.
Deputy commissioners have been entrusted by the government with the responsibility of examining and approving cases needing verification.
