Govt orders removal of Chinese battery management apps amid reports of remote shutdown of e-rickshaws

Following reports that e-rickshaws are being remotely disabled in India, government has decided to remove the mobile applications linked to concerns over the remote shutdown of e-rickshaws. Earlier, videos had surfaced saying certain vehicles could be disabled through the Chinese smartphone application BAT-BMS.

A poor E-rickshaw driver had to push his vehicle nearly 3 km after someone disabled it using a Chinese app, leaving him exhausted, helpless, and without a day’s earnings.

BAT-BMS, Lossigy, and Epoch-i-ion apps are the ones that will be removed from app stores in India amid this concern.

As per a report in The New Indian Express, IT Secretary said at the sidelines of CII Cybersecurity Summit, “That is right. There are a couple of apps, which came to our notice yesterday and both of them have been taken down from the app stores.”

Apps like BAT-BMS and Lossigy say they are there for management of Electric Vehicles’ battery health, but this lithium-ion battery management system doesn’t require passwords to connect. It connects to compatible Bluetooth-enabled lithium batteries. The apps show real-time battery status, charge level, voltage, current, temperature, cycle count, and cell health.

However, the lack of security features in the apps leave these e-rickshaw drivers vulnerable to such incidents where anyone can remotely hut their e-rickshaw down after connecting to their device.
