Ever since Trinamool Congress got swept away in the recent West Bengal assembly elections, they have been suffering one setback after another. Now in the latest turn of events, apparently 20 TMC MPs are looking to walk away from the party.

As per a News18 report, on Monday, June 8, 20 dissident Trinamool Congress MPs have submitted a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla seeking to join the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Notably, TMC have 28 MPs in the Lok Sabha.

If these 20 MPs join the NDA, the ruling coalition’s strength in the lower house will rise to 313 from the present 293.

Earlier in the day,  TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from the party and his Rajya Sabha seat. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy reached the Parliament early morning on Monday, June 8, to tender his resignation. He also quit Trinamool Congress membership. So far, he has not given any indication that he is planning to join another party.

Mamata Banerjee was already reeling with the rebellion in the West Bengal assembly where majority of the TMC MLAs voted for expelled TMC MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition. Now, her party members are abandoning her in the Parliament as well.

All these defections and internal rebellion raise serious questions about the future of Trinamool Congress and where it will head next.
