On Saturday, May 30, a political visit by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee to Sonarpur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district turned chaotic. Angry protesters demonstrating against the TMC MP hurled eggs and shoes at him during his visit. Abhishek Banerjee had gone to Sonarpur to meet the alleged victims of post-poll violence.
The elections in West Bengal took place in April-May this year. BJP emerged victorious by sweeping the state while Banerjee’s TMC finished distant second, losing its 15 years long hold on power in the state.
During Abhishek Banerjee’s visit, demonstrations against him escalated and visuals circulating online appeared to show chaos around the convoy and security personnel attempting to move the TMC leader away from the crowd. Reports suggested that Banerjee was also manhandled amid the protests before being escorted out of the area.

Following the incident, Banerjee predictably accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being behind the disruption. He claimed the violence was pre-planned and questioned the absence of adequate police deployment at the site.
The BJP rejected the allegations and political reactions quickly intensified, with both sides exchanging accusations over law and order and political conduct in the state.
Banerjee later continued parts of his outreach programme and interacted with alleged violence affected families.
