US secretary of State Marco Rubio landed in India on Saturday, May 23, as he starts a visit seen crucial to India-US relationship. Rubio started his visit from Kolkata where he visited Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. From Kolkata, Rubio has headed to Delhi where he is set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the meeting of foreign ministers of QUAD countries.

As India continues to strengthen its position on the global stage, the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is being closely watched by strategic and economic observers alike. The high-level interaction is expected to focus on a wide range of issues including energy cooperation, trade ties, technology partnerships, and regional security concerns.

Energy security is expected to emerge as one of the central themes during the discussions. Global fuel markets remain volatile due to ongoing geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruptions. India, one of the world’s largest energy importers, has been diversifying its sources of crude oil, LNG, and renewable technology partnerships. The United States, meanwhile, has become an important supplier of energy resources to India, particularly in the LNG sector. Both sides are likely to explore avenues for increasing cooperation in oil and gas trade, clean energy investments, and emerging sectors such as green hydrogen and battery storage.

Economic cooperation will also feature prominently on the agenda. Bilateral trade between India and the United States has grown significantly in recent years, making the US one of India’s largest trading partners. Discussions are expected to focus on improving market access, reducing trade barriers, and boosting investments in manufacturing and technology. With India positioning itself as a major alternative manufacturing hub amid global supply chain realignments, American companies are showing increasing interest in expanding operations in the country.

Technology and semiconductor collaboration could become another important talking point. India has been aggressively pushing for domestic semiconductor manufacturing under its industrial policy initiatives, while the United States has been encouraging trusted technology partnerships with allies and strategic partners. Cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, critical technologies, and digital infrastructure is also likely to receive attention during the talks.

Apart from economics and energy, regional and global security issues are expected to be discussed extensively. Both nations share concerns regarding maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region and have increased cooperation through forums such as the Quad. The leaders may also exchange views on the evolving situations in China, Taiwan, Ukraine, and West Asia.

The meeting between Narendra Modi and Marco Rubio is likely to reinforce the growing strategic convergence between India and the United States. As global geopolitical uncertainties continue to rise, both countries appear keen to further strengthen a partnership that is increasingly shaping the economic and strategic landscape of the 21st century.
