Tamil Nadu politics has barely settled after the dramatic rise of actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, but the new Chief Minister has already triggered his first major political controversy. Vijay’s decision to appoint his long-time astrologer and confidant Rickey Radhan Pandit Vettrivel as Officer on Special Duty (Political) in the Chief Minister’s Office has sparked sharp reactions from allies, particularly within the Congress camp, and reignited debate over the role of astrology in governance.
According to official government orders issued on Tuesday, May 12, Vettrivel has been appointed as OSD (Political), a position considered politically sensitive and strategically important within the CM’s office. The role typically involves coordination with party leaders, political communication, crisis management, and liaison work between the government and political stakeholders.
The appointment immediately attracted attention because Vettrivel is not merely a political aide. He is widely known in Tamil Nadu political circles as Vijay’s personal astrologer and spiritual adviser. During the 2024–26 political transition period, he frequently appeared on television debates and online interviews predicting Vijay’s meteoric political rise. He reportedly advised the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leadership on matters ranging from numerology linked to the party’s name to the timing of Vijay’s political announcements and oath-taking ceremonies.
The controversy comes at a particularly delicate moment because Vijay’s government depends on support from alliance partners, including the Congress party, after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election produced a fractured mandate. TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats but required outside support to cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly. Congress eventually backed the Vijay-led coalition, helping him secure power and ending decades of uninterrupted Dravidian dominance in Tamil Nadu politics.
Within hours of the announcement, criticism began emerging from Congress leaders and social media commentators. Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil publicly questioned the rationale behind giving an astrologer a powerful administrative position in government. Critics within the alliance argue that the appointment risks undermining the rationalist and anti-superstition legacy associated with Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian political culture.
The optics are especially sensitive in Tamil Nadu, where mainstream Dravidian politics historically projected itself as anti-orthodoxy and rooted in rationalist ideology championed by leaders such as C. N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi. While astrology has privately influenced many Indian politicians across party lines, openly elevating a personal astrologer to a formal political role inside the Chief Minister’s Office is being viewed by critics as symbolically significant.
Some observers have also drawn comparisons with former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who was often associated with astrology and ritual consultations during her tenure. Interestingly, reports suggest Vettrivel himself was once linked to Jayalalithaa’s political circle before later becoming associated with Vijay.
Supporters of Vijay, however, are defending the move by arguing that Vettrivel is not being appointed merely as an astrologer but as a trusted political strategist who played an active role during TVK’s election campaign. They point out that many political leaders appoint close confidants and loyalists to key advisory positions, and that political trust often matters as much as bureaucratic credentials in such appointments.
The episode nevertheless reveals the growing tension inside the newly formed ruling arrangement. Vijay’s rapid ascent disrupted Tamil Nadu’s traditional political order, but governing a coalition requires balancing symbolism, ideology, and alliance management. Congress leaders, who already face ideological contradictions in supporting a relatively personality-driven movement like TVK, appear uncomfortable with decisions that could alienate rationalist voters and urban middle-class supporters.
For Vijay, the controversy is also an early test of political perception management. As a newcomer attempting to transition from cinema superstardom to institutional governance, every administrative choice will be scrutinized not just for effectiveness but for what it signals about the style and direction of his government.
Whether the controversy fades quickly or becomes a recurring talking point will depend on how influential Vettrivel actually becomes inside the government. But the appointment has already succeeded in doing one thing: it has ensured that Vijay’s first week as Chief Minister remains politically dramatic, unpredictable, and intensely watched across India.
