Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir was brutally humiliated by India during Operation Sindoor in May this year. As India launched strike after strike inside Pakistan during the operation, destroying several terror camps and 11 air bases, all Asim Munir could do was watch. The drone and missile attack in retaliation by Pakistan was effectively neutralised by India using their state of the art Air Defence system.
After realising Pakistan Army is no match for Indian forces, Pakistan begged for peace and India agreed to a ceasefire. However, after the crushing humiliation, Pakistan Army General Asim Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. And now, months later, Asim Munir has got another promotion, making him Pakistan’s first ever Chief of Defence Forces. Maybe there is different criteria for promotions in Pakistan.
This promotion makes Asim Munir the Army officer with the most power in Pakistan’s history, of course except those who staged a coup and became dictators, the list of that is very long.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday, December 4, 2025, approved this appointment. Munir will serve as Chief of Defence Forces for a period of five years. However, knowing Pakistan and the grip that the Army has over the country, this may extend indefinitely.
Notably, in November this year, Pakistan parliament passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment providing to create the post of CDF with the objective to create unity of command and expedite the decision making in any critical situation.
