Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested in Hooghly, West Bengal, in connection with a case involving allegations of rape, criminal intimidation and other offences. Porel was taken into custody by the Mogra police late Monday night following directions from the Calcutta High Court. He is expected to be produced before a court as the investigation progresses.
The case stems from a complaint filed by a woman, reportedly a medical student from Karnataka, who alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for approximately three and a half years. According to reports, the woman alleged that the relationship involved a promise of marriage and subsequently accused Porel of sexual assault and intimidation. Police have registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. Abishek Porel has denied the allegations.
Born in West Bengal, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel represents Bengal in domestic cricket and has been part of the Delhi Capitals setup in the IPL since 2023.
Porel entered the IPL after being signed by Delhi Capitals as a replacement for injured captain Rishabh Pant in the 2023 season. He made his IPL debut against the Gujarat Titans, scoring 20 off 11 balls. In the 2024 season, Porel established himself as a regular member of the DC squad, playing all 14 league matches and scoring 327 runs at a strike rate of 159.51. Delhi Capitals retained him ahead of the 2025 season, when he scored 301 runs in 13 league matches.
The legal case now represents a major setback for the young cricketer’s career. However, the allegations remain allegations unless established through due legal process. The investigation and court proceedings will determine the facts of the case.
