Will Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee be the only ones left in Trinamool Congress? Now Sushmita Dev resigns from the party

Ever since Trinamool Congress lost the West Bengal Assembly elections, the party’s disintegration has been breathtaking. MLAs, MPs have all left the Mamata Banerjee-led party and the exodus is showing no signs of slowing down.

In yet another major blow for party chief Mamata Banerjee, TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned from the Upper House on Wednesday, June 10, becoming the latest prominent face to distance herself from the party amid an unprecedented internal crisis. It appears as if nobody wants to be associated with Mamata Banerjee right now. If this trend continues, only Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee will remain in TMC.

Sushmita Dev’s resignation comes barely days after a series of high-profile departures and rebellions that have shaken the very foundations of the party that once appeared invincible in West Bengal. Her exit is the second major parliamentary setback for the TMC within a week, adding to growing speculation that the party is rapidly losing its ability to hold leaders together.

The developments have triggered a question that would have seemed absurd just a few months ago: will only Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, eventually remain in the Trinamool Congress?

Since the party’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the cracks have widened dramatically within the party. Former Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray quit the party and launched a blistering attack on its leadership, alleging that the organisation had lost its moral compass and become dominated by individuals accused of corruption and criminality.

Several other leaders have either resigned from party positions or publicly expressed dissatisfaction. Former spokesperson Santanu Sen stepped down, citing the people’s rejection of the party, while MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar resigned from her organisational responsibilities amid growing leadership discontent.

The crisis became so severe that the party reportedly dissolved all its committees and frontal organisations in an attempt to regain control after widespread rebellion among legislators.

For years, critics argued that the TMC revolved almost entirely around the Banerjee family, with little space for independent leadership. As long as the party remained in power, those concerns were largely ignored. But once electoral defeat arrived, loyalty began evaporating at remarkable speed.

Sushmita Dev’s resignation may not be the last. If the current trend continues, the Trinamool Congress risks becoming a party with a famous name, a famous family, and very few people left willing to carry its flag.
