Telangana Chief Minister and Congress leader Revanth Reddy has sparked a major political row after claiming that the name of the state’s anti-encroachment task force was inspired by Adolf Hitler. On Saturday, June 6, at a conclave, Reddy said that the name of Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA), which has been spearheading anti-encroachment operations across Hyderabad, was inspired by Hitler’s organisation HYDRA.
Notably, HYDRA is a fictitious organisation in Marvel comics and has appeared as the antagonist in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films. In Captain America: The First Avenger, origins of HYDRA are shown in Nazi Germany, and maybe the Congress Chief Minister took that as a fact.
The comment immediately sparked reactions on social media, with critics questioning why a government initiative aimed at protecting public land and water bodies would be associated, even jokingly, with Hitler.
Notably, HYDRAA was established by the Telangana government to tackle illegal encroachments, particularly around lakes, parks, and government lands in the Hyderabad metropolitan region.
The Chief Minister’s remarks quickly attracted a lot of responses. Political opponents accused him of trivializing a serious government institution by comparing its name to symbols associated with Nazis and fictional extremism. Several social media users also pointed out that HYDRA, in Marvel lore, is a secretive organization known for its infamous slogan, “Hail Hydra,” making the comparison particularly unusual for a state-run enforcement agency.
Supporters of the Chief Minister, however, argued that the comments were made in a light-hearted context and were being taken out of proportion. They maintained that the focus should remain on HYDRAA’s work in reclaiming public land and restoring water bodies rather than on an offhand remark.
While the government has not issued any clarification regarding the statement, the debate has shifted attention away from HYDRAA’s ongoing anti-encroachment efforts and toward the curious discussion over the origins and perception of its name.
Whether intended as humor or political rhetoric, the Chief Minister’s comments have ensured that HYDRAA remains in the headlines—not just for demolitions and land recovery, but also for a remark that many have described as bizarre and unnecessary.
