India has added another golden chapter to its Asian Games campaign, with shooter Neeru Dhanda creating history at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Dhanda won the women’s individual trap gold medal, securing India’s fifth gold medal of the Games.
Dhanda made history as the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold in the trap event. Her victory also adds another major milestone to what has already been a breakthrough year for the 26-year-old shooter.
The Indian shooter entered the competition in outstanding form. Just days before the Asian Games, Dhanda had been among India’s leading performers in international shooting, having won gold at the 2026 ISSF World Cup in Lonato, Italy. That victory had made her the first Indian woman to win an individual ISSF World Cup gold in trap.
Her Asian Games triumph now takes that remarkable run a step further. Dhanda had also led the women’s trap qualification, demonstrating the consistency and composure that eventually carried her to the top of the podium.
The gold is India’s fifth of the 2026 Asian Games, following victories in women’s cricket, mixed-team shooting and both men’s and women’s kabaddi. India had entered Day 11 with four gold medals, before Dhanda’s individual triumph took the tally to five.
Her achievement is also another reminder of India’s growing strength in shooting. The sport has become one of the country’s major sources of international medals, with athletes competing successfully across pistol, rifle and shotgun disciplines.
For Dhanda, it is a personal landmark and a historic moment for Indian women’s trap shooting. From becoming a World Cup champion earlier this year to standing on the Asian Games podium, Dhanda has rapidly established herself among India’s leading shooters.
India has won a ton of Silver and Bronze medals during these Asian Games, but they had so far failed to achieve the desired number of Gold medals, hopefully Neeru Dhanda’s triumph opens the floodgates.
