Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has been in turmoil ever since the party lost West Bengal Assembly elections on May 4 this year. Since the massive electoral defeat which ended the party’s 15-year rule in Bengal, TMC has seen multiple exists and open revolt. Even in the assembly, 58 MLAs sided with expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and elected him the leader of opposition in the assembly.
Now, a latest blow has hit TMC as Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has resigned from the party and his Rajya Sabha seat.
Sukhendu Sekhar Roy reached the Parliament early morning on Monday, June 8, to tender his resignation. He also quit Trinamool Congress membership. So far, he has not given any indication that he is planning to join another party.
Speaking to Indian Express, Roy said, “(I resigned) because of the situation that was prevailing in the party for a long time. I have spent 59 years in politics. So I have to take a call at the appropriate time after introspection and retrospection.”
Notably, this resignation comes on the day when TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee are in Delhi for the INDI Alliance meeting, an alliance that is in as much turmoil as the TMC party.
There has been speculations that several MPs of TMC (they have 41 in total, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha combined) are looking to leave the party. There has also been speculation that these MPs are looking to join Bharatiya Janata Party though BJP has given no indication yet that they will welcome rebel TMC leaders.
