‘PM Modi a great man’: President Donald Trump says as he drops hints about visiting India in 2026

Trump likely to visit india

U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible visit to India next year (2026), though the exact dates are yet to be finalized. Trump confirmed that his recent discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi “went very well,” emphasizing their strong personal friendship. Calling Modi a “great man” and a “friend,” Trump stated that the Indian leader wants him to visit soon and that both sides are working out the details.

This development comes at a crucial diplomatic juncture, as India is preparing to host the next QUAD summit, which includes the United States, Japan, and Australia. Trump’s visit, if finalized, could add significant momentum to the strategic and economic partnership between Washington and New Delhi, reinforcing bilateral cooperation in trade, defense, and Indo-Pacific security.

The announcement follows ongoing efforts to resolve key trade disputes between the two countries. Under Trump’s current administration, the United States has maintained a 50% tariff on certain Indian imports, along with an additional 25% duty tied to India’s purchase of Russian oil. These measures were introduced as part of a broader policy aimed at recalibrating global trade dependencies and asserting U.S. leverage amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.

However, these tariffs have been challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court over their legality under emergency powers invoked by the administration. The court’s decision, expected by the end of 2025, could determine whether collected tariffs must be refunded and may set new precedents for future trade policy implementation.

Both governments are currently engaged in negotiations to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement by the end of 2025. The deal is expected to address tariff barriers, energy trade frameworks, and market access, potentially ushering in a more balanced and forward-looking trade regime.
