The fragile calm between the United States and Iran has shattered once again, with renewed military strikes threatening to push the Middle East into another dangerous phase of conflict. A US strike in southern Iran hit a residential home where a wedding ceremony was taking place, killing at least five people, including a child, and injuring around 50 others, according to Iranian officials and the Iranian Red Crescent.
The incident took place in Kuhestak in Sirik County, Hormozgan province, close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Iranian authorities condemned the attack, describing it as a strike on civilians. Reports said the house was hosting a wedding gathering when the attack occurred. Notably, the Strait of Hormuz has been closed ever since the US-Iran conflict started on February 28.
The United States, however, has said its latest military campaign is directed at Iranian military and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) capabilities. Washington has cited Iranian threats and attacks against American forces and commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz as justification for the renewed strikes. However, Iran has said the strikes targeted a wedding at a home.
The wedding strike has nevertheless added a deeply emotional dimension to an already dangerous confrontation. Images and reports from the scene showed extensive damage, while hospitals in the region received dozens of wounded people.
In response, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against US-linked targets across the region, including American military positions in Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq. The latest exchange represents one of the most serious escalations since a period of relative calm between the two sides.
The renewed fighting also threatens the global economy. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for international energy supplies, and continued military activity around the waterway has already pushed oil prices higher and increased fears of disruptions to global trade.
With Washington threatening further strikes and Tehran promising retaliation, hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough appear increasingly distant. The civilian deaths at the wedding have intensified anger in Iran and could make negotiations even harder.
