A decade after Arvind Kejriwal raised questions over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications, Abhijeet Dipke has revived the same political line of attack, asking PM Modi to make his degree public. Dipke made this demand after people asked him to show his degree from Boston University.

Dipke, founder of the satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), recently challenged PM Modi to show his academic credentials while responding to questions surrounding his own educational background. Dipke said he was willing to show his degree and scholarship documents, but asked whether the Prime Minister would do the same. Notably, PM Modi’s educational qualifications have been shared in public several times. However, Aam Aadmi Party, oh sorry, their current iteration, Cockroach Janata Party, refuse to accept official records.
Incidentally, the demand from Dipke echoes a controversy that Kejriwal himself spearheaded in 2016. Then Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal wrote to Delhi University’s Vice-Chancellor asking that Modi’s BA degree be made public. He also questioned the Prime Minister’s MA qualification from Gujarat University.
The issue escalated when the Central Information Commission directed Delhi University and Gujarat University to search for and provide information concerning PM Modi’s degrees to Kejriwal.
Gujarat University subsequently stated that PM Modi had completed his MA in Political Science in 1983, securing 499 out of 800 marks, or about 62.3 per cent. In May 2016, the BJP also publicly released copies of what it identified as Modi’s BA and MA degrees.
Dipke’s latest remarks therefore represent an interesting political déjà vu. The person making the demand is no longer formally speaking for the AAP, but his previous association with the party makes his decision to revive an issue once championed by Kejriwal is particularly striking.
