Mango exports from India reach 45 countries, shipments to US surge over 30% this season

The Indian mango exports have reached over 45 nations this season, marking a significant expansion in the global reach of the country’s most beloved fruit. The United States, recognized as the world’s largest mango importer, is receiving shipments that have already surpassed the entire volume from last year’s season nearly a month before the current season officially concludes.

Based on current patterns, deliveries to the US are expected to increase by more than 30 percent compared to the previous season.

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev shared these developments in a conversation with ANI, expressing confidence in the strong momentum. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has been actively organizing promotional events to boost awareness and demand for Indian mangoes abroad.

This year, such promotional activities have reached nearly 20 countries, including the Czech Republic, Malaysia, and Oman, demonstrating a strategic effort to diversify markets beyond traditional destinations.

The growth in US shipments reflects deeper market penetration and sustained consumer interest in Indian varieties like Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, and Langra.

These mangoes carry memories of summer gatherings and family traditions, making them emotionally resonant for diaspora communities and increasingly popular among American consumers discovering Indian flavors.

The emotional connection these fruits evoke helps explain why demand remains strong despite logistical challenges and distance.

Dev expressed optimism that India’s total mango exports could potentially double within the next one to two years, driven by this extensive outreach and market development work. The projection suggests that the current trajectory of growth is not temporary but part of a broader transformation in how Indian agricultural products are positioned globally. This ambition aligns with wider efforts to increase agricultural exports and strengthen India’s presence in international trade markets.

Major mango-growing states include Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Pradesh, with Uttar Pradesh ranking first in production at 26.75 percent share.

The state also holds the highest productivity as of 2023-24, making it a critical hub for export-quality fruit. This regional concentration of production supports the scale needed to meet growing international demand while maintaining quality standards.

During the fiscal year 2024-25, India exported 29,938.40 metric tonnes of fresh mangoes, valued at 56.50 million USD, according to DGCIS data. The top export destinations for this period were the United Arab Emirates, USA, UK, Kuwait, and Qatar.

These figures provide a baseline showing how the current season’s expansion to 45 countries represents meaningful growth beyond previous performance levels.

Promotional campaigns in the US have included events in major cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington, New York, and Atlanta, targeting key consumer markets directly.

This city-level approach helps build visibility in regions with large South Asian populations while also introducing Indian mangoes to new audiences unfamiliar with the fruit. The strategy reflects understanding that market development requires both diaspora engagement and broader consumer education.

The success in mango exports demonstrates how agricultural products with cultural significance can build sustainable international demand when supported by proper market development infrastructure.

Continued investment in irradiation centers, cold chain logistics, and quality certification will be essential to sustain this growth trajectory and address existing limitations in shipment volumes. The sector stands at a point where policy support and market enthusiasm are aligning to create new opportunities for farmers and exporters alike.
