Hours after US President Donald Trump announced extension of the ceasefire with Iran, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard opened fire on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The US President had unilaterally announced the extension of the ceasefire after second round of peace talks failed to materialise.

The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said the attack happened around 7:55 a.m. in the strait and targeted a container ship, reported the Associated Press.

Earlier on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran, saying it would remain in place until Iranian leaders present a unified proposal and ongoing discussions are concluded.

The US President had credited Pakistan leadership of Asim Munir and Shehbaz Sharif for requesting an extension of the ceasefire.

However, with Iran refusing to come to the table for negotiations, and Strait of Hormuz remaining blocked, the ceasefire seems to be in name only with no end to the conflict in sight.

The war in West Asia began after US and Israel launched air strikes on Iran targeting the Iranian leadership. A fragile ceasefire was achieved 2 weeks back but a permanent end to the conflict doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon.

Iran on their part has said that Trump’s announcement of the extension of the ceasefire is just a ploy as it prepares for a major strike on Iran.
