Phones across India buzzed simultaneously today as the Indian Government tested the nationwide mobile-based disaster communication systems.

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the mobile-based disaster communication systems.

The alert message said, “India launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message. Government of India.”

The same message was also broadcast in Hindi.

Department of Telecommunications had earlier posted an advisory on X that such messages can come repeatedly on your phone during the testing phase.

The system has been developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Government of India to ensure timely dissemination of critical information to its citizens.

The key of the initiative is a platform called SACHET, SACHET was developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics, known as C-DOT, the premier research and development centre of the Department of Telecommunications, and is based on the Common Alerting Protocol recommended by the International Telecommunication Union. It is currently operational across all 36 states and union territories of India.

This technology enables the simultaneous transmission of alerts to all mobile devices within a defined geographical area, ensuring near-instant delivery even during network congestion.
