Following PM Narendra Modi’s call for austerity measures in light of the war in West Asia, the Supreme Court of India has also joined the austerity push.

The Supreme Court, on Friday, May 15, announced a series of fuel conservation measures, including virtual hearings, car-pooling by judges and Work From Home (WFH) arrangements for registry staff.

According to a circular issued by Supreme Court Secretary General Bharat Parashar, the new measures have come into immediate effect following an Office Memorandum issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

The remaining staff would continue to remain physically present in office to ensure uninterrupted functioning of the court administration.

Notably, on Sunday, in Secunderabad, PM Modi appealed to citizens and institutions to reduce fuel consumption and avoid unnecessary expenditure in view of the economic pressures arising from the prolonged conflict in West Asia.

Since then, several politicians, including PM Modi, have cut down their convoy sizes, and have also taken measures in their respective states to reduce the consumption of oil.

The Iran War started on February 28, followed by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, the main maritime route for the trade of crude oil. This has resulted in a spike in global oil prices putting a strain on economies around the world.

To counter this, PM Modi had proposed these austerity measures so that Indian economy isn’t much affected and Indian foreign reserves aren’t spent during this crisis.
