IUML belittles Rahul’s “Break the Cage”, backs Grand Mufti’s infamous “woman like gold necklace” statement

Why is Congress leader Rahul Gandhi so selective ?. In other words, full of double standards.

Some days back, he was roaring. Highlighting the plight of feminine gender in India. He gave a call for a ‘Smash the Patriarchy’ campaign. But while he highlighted that women were systematically ignored and restricted by a stereotypical society, a grand mufti in Keralam, a favourite state of Gandhis’, was giving a contradictory statement.

Keralam’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad’s statement, where he made a comparison between a woman and a gold necklace, stating that just as a gold necklace is kept in a box, in the same way, a woman should be kept inside the house.

He even asserted that the Quran prescribes the purdah system to protect women and thus bringing them into the public domain would lead to great destruction.

His statement did cause furore, but not to the Congress and its allies. One of the oldest allies of Congress in Keralam, IUML did not speak a word against the ;Grand Mufti rather, it termed his statement a scholarly expression.

Instead of condemning Grand Mufti’s remarks, IUML state president Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal found it better to defend him. Besides calling it a “scholarly expression”, the muslim league leader even attributed the statement to a concern over the safety of women.

But will Rahul Gandhi have the guts to seek an explanation, if not from the grand mufti, at least from its ally IUML? After all, he keeps high regard for IUML, which he proudly says is a secular party. But would he now go against IUML, which has a history of keeping neglecting women ?.

One is surprised to know that in its seventy-five years of history, IUML in recently concluded assembly fielded two women candidates, the highest in its history in Kerala. In other words, the women had little say in it’s day-to-day party affairs. But Rahul Gandhi will not utter a word. He will only target BJP-ruled states. But forgets that charity begins at home.

Rahul Gandhi has yet again been exposed. This time by his own blue-eyed boy ally.
