As part of the austerity push, PM Narendra Modi has directed that the number of vehicles in his convoy be reduced by 50 per cent, a move aimed at promoting austerity and reducing fuel consumption amid the current global situation. The Prime Minister has also asked the Special Protection Group (SPG), the agency responsible for his security, to increase the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in his convoy.
Due to the war in West Asia, globally the prices of oil have spiked during the last 2 months. With the Strait of Hormuz still closed, PM Modi had asked Indian citizens to try and reduce their oil consumption. The Prime Minister has taken the lead on that front with this austerity move.
Along with the PM, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, have also decided to reduce the number of vehicles in their convoys. Other cabinet ministers have also followed suit.
Even though the cars in the convoy have been reduced, all critical security components continued to remain in place in accordance with SPG guidelines to ensure the Prime Minister’s safety.
