Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano erupted on Sunday, November 23, sending ash plumes up to 14 km (8.7 miles) high. The volcanic ash from the eruption drifted towards India with the air currents. Of course, just like smoke and ash from anywhere in the world, the volcanic ash arrived in Delhi. Because no matter where there is smoke in in the world, whether from a volcano or from stubble burning, it has to reach Delhi. People say abc got India freedom or xyz got India freedom, but I think India got freedom after the Britishers got tired of smoke from everywhere reaching Delhi.

However, Delhi residents have now become immune to all these minor things like breathing in smoke and ash. After the volcanic ash from the eruption reached Delhi, majority of the locals failed to notice any difference in the air quality of the city.

“It is a very pleasant day, the air is great, the weather is nice, smog and smoke all around, this is what a nice day in Delhi looks like, I don’t understand what all the fuss was about in news about ash or volcano or something”, said Ankit Kumar, a resident of Karol Bagh in Delhi.

Another local, Vaishali from Pitampura said, “All this volcanic ash news are just rumours. The air is as good as it was yesterday. In fact, today I didn’t even switch on all the 4 air purifiers in our home, only 2, the air was much better.”

Meanwhile, Sanjay from Rohini said that he actually spent more time outdoors today than he did previously. He said, “I heart there is some different type of smoke in the air of Delhi today compared to normal. Till now, smoke was coming to our city from neighbouring states. Is baar to imported maal hai bhai. So I just wanted to inhale some imported smoke this time.”

Meanwhile, a person burning stubble in a state close to Delhi what is the big deal about some smoke as he tried to cover his nose with 3 N95 masks.
