In a deeply disturbing incident, four vehicles belonging to a Jewish charity were set on fire in North London, triggering widespread outrage and a major police investigation. The attack took place in the early hours of March 23 in Golders Green, an area known for its large Jewish community, and is being treated as a suspected antisemitic hate crime, the Metropolitan Police said.

The vehicles targeted were ambulances operated by Hatzola, a volunteer-run Jewish emergency medical service that provides free assistance to the local community. These ambulances were not ordinary vehicles – they were critical lifelines, used to respond to medical emergencies. Setting them ablaze has therefore been viewed not just as vandalism, but as a direct attack on community welfare and safety.

According to authorities, multiple explosions were heard as oxygen cylinders inside the ambulances ignited, causing damage to nearby buildings and forcing evacuations as a precaution. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. CCTV footage reportedly shows three suspects involved in the arson, and a manhunt is currently underway.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident as a “deeply shocking antisemitic attack,” emphasizing that such hatred has no place in society. Leaders across political and religious lines echoed this sentiment, calling the act cowardly and urging unity against rising antisemitism.

The attack has also reignited concerns about a broader surge in antisemitic incidents in the United Kingdom in recent years. Reports indicate a sharp rise in such cases since the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, with Jewish communities increasingly feeling vulnerable.

What makes this incident particularly alarming is the nature of the target. Ambulances represent care, neutrality, and emergency support – values that transcend politics or religion. Attacking such services signals a worrying escalation, where even humanitarian infrastructure is no longer spared.

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of hate-fuelled violence. Beyond the immediate damage, it has left a community shaken, raising urgent questions about security, social cohesion and the need for stronger action against hate crimes.
