“If you don’t like it, don’t watch it”: Leftists and liberals should follow their own advice

This week Aditya Dhar’s much anticipated film ‘Dhurandhar-The Revenge’ released in cinemas. It is a direct sequel to Dhurandhar which released in cinemas last week and become a mega hit. The sequel is set to become an even bigger hit as it registers a record breaking opening at the box office.

While the Ranveer Singh-starrer is getting widespread acclaim and love from the audience, a section in India is highly upset with the movie. Just like the first Dhurandhar movie, the sequel has also led to a meltdown among Indian left-liberals. Though it was expected, the meltdown is quite amusing to see all the same.

The movie has been called many things, away from reality, anti-Muslim, too violent, hyper-nationalist and what not. Aditya Dhar is being heavily criticised in these circles for making a ‘jingoist hyper-nationalist film. Dhar has been accused of spreading hate, toxicity and propaganda. He has also been called member of BJP IT cell for showing demonetisation affecting people who circulated fake currency notes.

This kind of hate for directors who make nationalist movies is not new, but with Dhurandhar movies, it has reached another level. Many so called liberal film critics are even refusing to review the movie saying that it is not worth it. To all those who have a problem with these films, we have a simple suggestion, don’t like it, don’t watch it. Despite seeing Dhurandhar, you rushed to see Dhurandhar 2 only to hate on it? You knew the theme of the film in advance, but still rushing to see it first day just to outrage on it? Very strange behaviour.

This advice from the leftists has been thrown around for years every time Hindus got offended at the depiction of Hinduism in movies. Hindu sentiments were offended, villain were invariably shown with tilaks on their forehead, fake atrocities against minorities were shown, Hindus were shown as regressive and superstitious. Every time such a movie came out the advice was – don’t watch it. Then why are all of you queuing up to watch Dhurandhar-The Revenge when you knew what the film is going to entail.

And what is this behaviour to label a movie showing Pakistan’s ill intentions towards India an anti-Muslim movie. Does Pakistan not sponsor terrorism in India? Do they not aim to harm India with a thousand cuts? Are weapons from Pakistan not getting carried into India by terrorists? If a movie shows all that, how does it become anti-Muslim?

Actually, the narrative has slipped from these leftists’ hands during the last few years and this doesn’t sit well with them. Bollywood, where spy movies used to have ISI and RAW spies working together, romancing each other, has now moved to showing the reality of ISI agents and their ill-intentions towards India.

Dhurandhar movies are showing Pakistan and ISI for what they are, and that really seems to upset the ‘Aman Ki Asha’ gang. Dhurandhar is based on real events and real characters. Depiction of all these real characters, with some creative license for a movie, has for some reason caused a meltdown in liberal circles.

The film’s director Aditya Dhar is of course the main target of this hate. With films like Uri, Article 370, Dhurandhar movies, Aditya Dhar has forever changed the game in Bollywood. Films with a nationalist fervour, showing stark realities, making people see Pakistan for what it is, are causing a real heartburn.

And once again, we advice you, there is no compulsion to watch the movie. If you don’t like nationalist movie, don’t watch it.
