Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan released from prison after 23 months, read why he was jailed

Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan today walked out of Sitapur jail where he was lodged from past 23 months. He was accompanied by his sons Abdullah and Adeeb and they then proceeded towards Rampur. The visuals of him leaving the jail has since been viral.

A special MP-MLA court last week acquitted Khan in a 17-year-old case concerning road blockage and damage to public property where he was an accused. In 2008, Khan was accused of causing disturbance near the Chhajlet police station after the police removed a hooter from his car.

Khan, along with his supporters then blocked the road which led to traffic jam. The protest then escalated to violence, damaging several electric poles. Subsequently, a case was filed against him.

As per reports, the Sitapur jail received the release orders in 72 of Azam Khan’s cases including 19 in which the special MP-MLA court had issued bail orders. Prior to that, release orders were issued in 53 other cases, including Quality Bar case.

Hailing his release, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said it is a matter of joy that Khan has been released. Meanwhile, setting ground for the 2027 state assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav said that should his party return to power, all ‘false cases’ against Khan will be withdrawn. Yadav was responding to a query on speculations that Azam Khan might join Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party. Yadav also told the journalists present that should Samajwadi Party come to power, all ‘false cases filed against journalists’ would also be withdrawn.
